FAN SELECTION GUIDE

How to Match Cooling Fan Guards, Filters & Grilles

Choose a guard, filter or grille by the complete mounting arrangement. A matching nominal fan size does not confirm fit, airflow performance or an enclosure ingress rating.

Start with the fan and panel drawing

Check the fan reference, outer frame, mounting hole centres, panel cutout, panel thickness and available depth. Compare the accessory drawing with the production fan drawing. Some catalogue size codes and cutouts require correction or clarification; request the current drawing before machining a panel.

Choose the accessory function

A wire or plastic guard provides a physical barrier around the fan opening. A filter assembly adds a removable filtration element. A louvered grille defines the panel opening and airflow path. Confirm the intended function, airflow direction and included components for a complete assembly set.

Account for airflow resistance

Guards, grilles and filter media can reduce installed airflow. Ask for pressure-drop data at the intended airflow, including the clean and service conditions of the filter where relevant. Recheck the fan operating point with all accessories fitted.

Treat filtration and ingress claims separately

The CM filter catalogue lists an 89% filtration figure without particle size or test method. This is not a verified efficiency class. Likewise, a component-level IP claim does not certify the assembled enclosure. Request the applicable report, assembly details and test conditions for the selected configuration.

Confirm materials, service and supply contents

Confirm the material grade, temperature limits, finish, fasteners, filter replacement method and service interval. Ask whether a set includes the fan, guard, filter and mounting hardware. Resolve the bill of materials before ordering.

What should you send with an enquiry?

Send the fan model or CM reference, accessory reference, panel and fan drawings, required cutout, environment, target airflow and quantity. Include any filtration, ingress, material or temperature requirements so the applicable evidence can be requested.
